Ways to Support Yourself into the New Year

This time of year can be a chance to pause and reflect, celebrate what went well, and think of small, reasonable ways to support yourself and your mental health in 2026 Here are some simple ways to support yourself well in the New Year:

  • Honor what’s gone well: Maybe you started setting boundaries at work, seeing a therapist, or going on a walk a few times a week this year. Don’t let those wins pass you by without acknowledging them (and yourself!). What did you learn this year? What are you proud of? Give yourself credit in a way that feels right to you. Maybe by telling a friend or therapist, making art, or writing a note to your future self. These exercises help us honor our efforts and ground us in resilience for a new year.

  • Schedule time for yourself: Before your calendar fills up with kickoff meetings, block time for what keeps you grounded. This could be a peer support group, movement breaks, connecting with someone you trust, or even just space to rest and reset. It may sound cliché, but we truly cannot pour from an empty cup. Commit to yourself in the same way you’d commit to work, family, or loved ones.

  • Create a toolkit for Future You: Transition moments can bring up a lot of emotions, and January can be hectic. Make a short list of what supports you: grounding exercises, a playlist of music that helps you settle, journaling prompts, or someone you can reach out to. Consider putting together a small “care kit” with items that comfort you. This can include both tangible items (think lip balm, a favorite rock, essential oils, a card from your child) and practices that support you. Have fun and make it your own, feeling free to adjust it over time.

  • Set one or two gentle intentions: Instead of big resolutions, think about small, meaningful shifts: more rest, clearer boundaries, or giving yourself permission to ask for help. Let these be guides, not pressures. Often, we approach this time of year with judgment and self-criticism, which can make us feel behind before we even start. What if instead we treated ourselves as we would a beloved friend, moving as if we loved ourselves?

As we close out the year, may you find moments of peace, connection, and reflection. Taking even small steps toward caring for yourself can make a big difference in how you experience this season and the new year ahead.

Until next year,
