Building Wellbeing: A Guide to Stress Management for Teens

Being a teen means juggling school, extracurricular activities, friends, family expectations, social media, and figuring out who you even are. That’s a lot for one brain and body to handle. So if you feel stressed sometimes (or a lot of the time), you’re not alone. The important thing isn’t avoiding stress completely. It’s learning how to respond to it in ways that protect your wellbeing.
Here are six realistic steps you can start using right away.
- Connect: You’re not meant to handle everything alone. Connection reminds you that you’re supported. Even sending one “hey, how are you?” text can help you feel less isolated.
- Stay Organized: Use a planner, calendar, or notes app to keep track of assignments and activities. Focus on what needs to get done today, not everything at once. It doesn’t need to be perfect; just having a basic plan can calm your mind.
- Move Your Body and Fuel It: Find a type of mindful movement that feels best for you, whether that’s walking, yoga, or playing your favorite sport. Your brain also needs fuel to function, so don’t forget to eat regularly.
- Practice Mindfulness: When stress starts spiraling, pause. Take a few slow breaths. Notice five things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear. Grounding yourself in the present helps your nervous system calm down.
- Do One Thing Just for You: Every day, try to do at least one small thing that’s just for you. Listen to your favorite song, go outside for five minutes, watch a funny video, journal, text a friend, or take a shower and relax. Find small things to look forward to and ground your day in.
- Keep Learning and Growing: You’re still becoming who you are, and that’s exciting! Trying new things, learning new skills, or exploring new interests can boost confidence and give you a sense of purpose.
