Building Self-Esteem: A Simple Guide for Teens

Let’s be honest, being a teen can be a lot sometimes. Between school, friends, family expectations, sports, and social media, it can feel like you’re constantly being seen, judged, compared, and evaluated. From about ages 10 to your early 20s, your brain is extra sensitive to social situations. That means rejection can feel bigger, embarrassment can feel more intense, and comparisons can hit harder. So if your self-esteem feels shaky sometimes? That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It means you’re human.

Healthy self-esteem doesn’t mean thinking you’re perfect. It means knowing you still have value when you mess up. It means being able to say, “I’m learning,” instead of, “I’m terrible.” The good news? Self-esteem is something you can build. Here are some simple, real-life ways to start building it.

  1. You Can’t Read Minds: Have you ever assumed someone was mad at you because they didn’t text back? Or thought someone was judging you because of “a look”? Our brains love to fill in the blanks. When your brain creates a negative story, pause and ask: Do I know this is true? Challenging those assumptions protects your confidence.
  2. Challenge Negative Thoughts: Notice how you talk to yourself; would you talk that way to a friend? If the answer is no, try replacing harsh thoughts with fair ones. “I failed that test,” becomes “I didn’t do well this time, but I can improve.” You don’t have to jump to “I’m amazing.” Just aim for fair and realistic.
  3. Surround Yourself with Support: Some friends lift you up. Others might make you feel judged or not good enough. You don’t have to cut people off dramatically, but leaning toward supportive friendships can make a huge difference in how you see yourself.
